The Fighter

Based on a true story, 'The Fighter' stars Mark Wahlberg as 'Micky Ward', a professional boxer whom has had a string of bad luck with the desire to turn a new leaf for the sake of his career; Christian Bale stars as his older brother -'Dicky' - a previously successful boxer who loses his way after developing an addiction to crack cocaine.

Th cinematography and soundtrack in particular make this movie an enjoyable one. During scenes in which characters are fighting (professionally), the visual appears much like it would if you were watching an actual fight on TV. In addition to this, the soundtrack includes hits like 'How You Like Me Now' and 'Here I Go Again', but more importantly, the songs are sometimes integrated in to the movie through subtle gestures (having the characters sing them, stopping the music when a radio gets turned down, etc). This lends a particular amount of authenticity to the film, and allows the audience to empathize with the feelings, thoughts, and actions of the characters portrayed.

The Fighter

Bale earned an Oscar for best supporting actor for this film, and it was whole heartingly deserved; his portrayal of a man with an addiction to crack cocaine was respectable and realistic. More than that, it was grounded and didn't depend on exaggerated antics in order for the audience to understand the extent of his condition (as someone that works in substance abuse, this is easily appreciated). Every moment Bale speaks is a powerful one, and his performance deserved the accolades that were awarded to him afterwards. In addition to Bale's acting alone, the juxtaposition of him and Wahlberg as brothers appeared to be natural and convincing.

The Fighter

In my research it does appear that the movie exaggerated details about boxing, although details about Micky and Dicky's life are true to the core; this may upset individuals that follow boxing tooth-and-nail, but these details work to keep viewers engaged and invested in the primary storyline.

A fantastic story about boxing, family, and never giving up hope:
I would recommend!
